ASME B18.22.1 — Plain Washers (Inch Series)

ASME B18.22.1-1965 (R2008) is the inch-series plain washer standard. It is not interchangeable with metric DIN 125-A or ISO 7089 — use the size table on this page for inch dimensions.

🎯 What This Standard Covers — and What It Does Not

Point Position
What it is for General purpose plain washers in the inch series — the flat washer a drawing calls out as ASME B18.22.1.
Designations in the 1965 edition Two plain washer designations, Type A and Type B. Their dimensional definitions belong to the standard itself; this page does not restate or reinterpret them.
What it does not cover Helical spring-lock washers and tooth lock washers. Those are covered by ASME B18.21.1, which also carries plain washers in the inch series.

🔗 Relationship to Other Standards

These are the documents that turn up in the same enquiry. Their scopes overlap — none of them is a drop-in substitute for another.

Standard Scope Relationship Interchangeability
ASME B18.21.1 Washers: helical spring-lock, tooth lock and plain washers (inch series) Same B18 washer family; its 2009 (R2016) edition is the one the publisher lists in place of the 1965 B18.22.1 edition CHECK THE EDITION
DIN 125-A Plain washer, metric (German designation) Metric document with its own nominal size series NOT INTERCHANGEABLE
ISO 7089 Plain washers, normal series, metric Metric document with its own nominal size series NOT INTERCHANGEABLE

Inch and metric washers do not interchange. A DIN 125-A or ISO 7089 washer is dimensioned against a metric nominal size series; an ASME B18.22.1 washer is dimensioned against an imperial one. The two systems do not share a size series or a set of dimensional callouts, so a substitution is a drawing change with an engineering decision behind it — not a catalogue swap. Select by drawing or by the standard designation; if you are replacing one system with the other, confirm the dimensional callouts before the order is placed.

📏 Dimensional Data — Request the Size Chart

This page does not print a dimension table. Nominal washer dimensions for ASME B18.22.1 are published by ASME in the standard, and the edition named on your drawing is the controlling one — a table copied onto a website is a secondary copy that can drift away from the edition you are actually buying against.

Instead we check the dimensional data against the publisher's edition you specify — and against your drawing, where one exists — and confirm it on the quotation. Tell us the nominal size (for example 1/4" or 3/8") and the designation, and we will send the size chart for that callout.

🧾 How to Specify and Request a Quote

Six items are enough to quote without a round of questions:

  1. Standard number — ASME B18.22.1, plus the edition your drawing calls out where one is named.
  2. Nominal size — the inch size the washer fits, for example 1/4" or 3/8".
  3. Material and grade — as required by your drawing or specification.
  4. Surface finish — as specified, for example plain, zinc plated or hot-dip galvanized.
  5. Quantity — order quantity, and the delivery schedule where it is fixed.
  6. Drawing — for a non-standard washer, or where a callout differs from the standard.

Without a drawing we quote to the standard designation and the edition you name. Where a washer is non-standard the drawing governs, and a standard number on its own is not enough to quote against.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What does ASME B18.22.1 cover?

General purpose plain washers in the inch series, in two designations (Type A and Type B). It does not cover helical spring-lock washers or tooth lock washers — those sit in ASME B18.21.1, which also carries plain washers in the inch series.

Is ASME B18.22.1 still current?

The designation is ANSI/ASME B18.22.1-1965 (R2008): the 1965 edition, reaffirmed in 2008. If a specification is being written or updated today, note that the publisher's catalogue now lists that edition as replaced by ASME B18.21.1-2009 (R2016). Existing drawings that cite B18.22.1 are still quoted to their callout — check which edition the drawing holder actually holds before ordering, and name the edition on the enquiry.

How is it different from ASME B18.21.1?

ASME B18.21.1 covers helical spring-lock washers, tooth lock washers and plain washers in the inch series; ASME B18.22.1 covers plain washers only. B18.21.1 is the broader washer document, and its 2009 edition — reaffirmed in 2016 — is the one the publisher lists in place of the 1965 B18.22.1 edition.

Can I substitute a DIN 125-A or ISO 7089 washer for an ASME B18.22.1 washer?

Not as a drop-in substitution. DIN 125-A and ISO 7089 are metric documents with their own nominal size series and dimensional callouts; ASME B18.22.1 is inch series. Inch and metric washers do not interchange, so a substitution is a drawing change that needs an engineering decision — it is not something a supplier can make on a catalogue cross-reference.

What do you need to quote an ASME B18.22.1 washer?

The standard number (and the edition, if your drawing names one), the nominal size such as 1/4" or 3/8", the material and grade, the surface finish, and the quantity. If the washer is non-standard, or the callout differs from the standard, send the drawing instead — the drawing governs.

Where is the size table?

In the standard. This page does not reproduce the values: request the size chart and we will send the data for the nominal sizes and the edition in your enquiry, checked against the publisher's copy.
