Fastener HS codes: the 7318 subheadings explained

Every iron or steel screw, bolt, nut, coach screw, rivet and washer is classified in one HS heading: 7318. The six-digit level splits that heading by product type, and each importing market adds its own digits on top. This page maps the subheadings and shows where to verify the full code.

Bottom line

The 7318 subheadings at a glance

Six-digit descriptions are the Harmonized System text; the right-hand column gives examples of products from our own standards library that usually classify there. Classification still depends on the goods as presented (material, thread, whether nuts or washers travel with the bolts).

Six digits globally, eight or ten nationally

Every WTO member uses the same first six digits, so 7318.16 means “nuts” in every schedule. Beyond six digits each market is free to split further:

Frequently asked questions

What is the HS code for bolts?

Iron or steel bolts are classified in HS heading 7318; the six-digit subheading for “other screws and bolts, whether or not with their nuts or washers” is 7318.15. The EU, US and China add further digits to the national line, so confirm the full code on the official lookup for the destination market.

What is the HS code for nuts?

Nuts of iron or steel fall under subheading 7318.16.

What is the HS code for washers?

Spring washers and other lock washers are 7318.21; other washers are 7318.22.

Is HS 7318 the same as EU CN 7318?

The first six digits are the same. The EU Combined Nomenclature (CN) extends them to eight digits and TARIC adds further codes for measures, so an EU import check needs the CN/TARIC line, not just HS6.

Does stainless steel change the HS code?

Not at the six-digit HS level — 7318 does not split by material there. National tariffs can split by material further down: for example, the US HTS has separate lines such as 7318.14.10.30 for self-tapping screws of stainless steel.
